The Salt Mine Wieliczka is the oldest salt enterprise on Polish land dating back to the Middle Ages. For centuries it was the source of the country’s wealth and the material foundation of its culture. Today it is the most popular Polish tourist attraction. The underground tourist route is visited annually by over 1,000,000 tourists. In 1978, the mine was inscribed in UNESCO's First World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage. Several hundreds of years of rock salt exploitation have shaped the spatial arrangement of its excavated structure. Lying on nine levels, concealed under the town, the mine reaches down to the depth of 327 metres. Subterranean Wieliczka consists of nearly 300 kilometres of corridors and almost 3,000 chambers. The tourist route accessible to visitors includes a 3.5-kilometres section located from 64 to 135 metres below ground level. The tour starts by descending 378 steps down one of the main shafts. During a walk you can admire magnificent chapels, captivating underground lakes, original tools and equipment used by miners and many salt carvings and murals. After sightseeing, you can rest in the chamber complex 125 metres underground where you can find souvenir shops, a restaurant, and a post office.

During the 2,5 hour walk through the spacious premises of Brewery you can see carefully renovated buildings dating back from the 19th century and huge fermentation tanks. You can also see state of the art packaging lines working at an impressive speed of 60 thousand bottles per hour and can touch an original copper ladle dating from 1916 in an antique brewhouse. Visiting the Brewery during its „full operation” lets you see how beer is brew. In the Brewing Museum which is located in a historical building of the former protestant church dating back to 1902 you will see collection of the most beautiful bottles, beer mugs, original oak barrels and many others items related to the art of brewing and drinking beer. Wadowice is the place, where Karol Wojtyła, the later Pope John Paul II was born. This is a small town located approx 40 km from Krakow, where you can find buildings and places connected to the Karol Wojtyła childhood and youth. Worth seeing are:

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is the pilgrimage center situated on famous papal route leading from Wadowice to Krakow, 44km south west Krakow and 14 km south of Wadowice. The Passion-Marian Sanctuary in Kalwaria as a historical architectural, park landscape and pilgrimage complex is entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the only Calvary in the world. The Sanctuary consist of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, the Franciscan Monastery and the Kalwarian Avenues – famous Way of the Cross with 42 chapels illustrating Christ's passion.

Łagiewniki- district of Krakow situated about 4 kilometers from Old Town, site of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Place connected with life and activity the Faustyna Kowalska, the booster of cult of God's Mercy. One of the most important pilgrimage centers in Poland, where pilgrims from all over the world arrive to pray in Sanctuary of Divine Mercy. Sanctuary chapel houses the miraculous icon of Merciful Jesus and the relics of Sister Faustina. In August 2002, John Paul II consecrated the newly built Basilica and dedicated the whole world to Divine Mercy.

Zakopane is situated 120 kilometers south of the Krakow, in the beautiful Tatra Mountains, the only alpine mountains in this part of Europe. It is the highest situated town in Poland (between 750 to 1000 m above sea level). Zakopane is the Polish capital of winter sports and mountain tourism. It is exellent place to visit any time of the year. Zakopane, reputed for its still alive highlander’s folklore offering a lot attractions such as unique wooden architecture (e.g church at Jaszczurówka, old houses at Kościeliska street),breathtaking and relaxing mountain walk (e.g Koscieliska Valley), museums (Tatras Museum) and many sports and cultural events. The center of tourist life is pedestrian street, Krupowki. The town of Oświęcim lies approx 70 km west of Kraków. It is known because of Auschwitz- Birkenau, one of the biggest extermination Nazi Camps, symbol of terror, genocide and the Holocaust. It started in 1940 as a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners. In 1942 it became the center for extermination of European Jews and the largest of the death camps. From 1940 till 1944 in Auschwitz-Birkenau were exterminated between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people different nationalities. After the war, in 1947, there was Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum created in the place of the concentration camp. In 1979 UNESCO included Auschwitz- Birkenau on list of Word Heritage sites.

The raft trip down mountain river through the Dunajec River Gorge in the Pieniny Mountains is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Poland. Trip begins at Sromowce and ends 18-km later in Szczawnica. It lasts two or three hours, depending on the water level of the river. During the rafting on wooden boats, through one of the most beautiful parts of the Pieniny National Park you can admire picturesque mountain scenery and excellent view of the high summits of Trzy Korony and Sokolica. The Niedzica Castle which is also known under the name of Dunajec Castle, was erected on the site of former stronghold surrounded by earthen walls, in approx. 1325. Lies on a high hill,approx. 30 m above the upper water level the castle offers a splendid panoramic view over the Pieniny Mountains, the Czorsztyn artificial lake with its dam and the ruined 14th century Czorsztyn castle. The Niedzica castle houses a museum which illustrates the history of the castle and of the Spisz region. It also has nice archaeological and historical exhibitions.

Tour No. 16 National Park Ojców & Pieskowa Skała Castle

Pieskowa Skała is situated 27 km from Krakow at along the route "Eagle Nests Trail". You can see here a well preserved castle called "A pearl of the Polish Renaissance". It is dates back to the middle 14th century and since 1970 it has been home to a European Art Museum. The Castle is situated on the hill surrounded by the forests of the Ojców National Park. The central point of the Ojców National Park is village Ojców, where you can see the ruins of castle, raised on the steep rock by King Casimir the Great and old wooden church built "on water" across the stream. A curious detail is the wall of steep limestone crags in Ojców National Park. The most known is Hercules Rock about 25 metres high. In the Ojców National Park there are many beautiful valleys and natural caves. The most popular are the King Lokietek Cave (320 metres long) and Dark Cave (186 m long). Optional : on the way back to Krakow it is possible to visit the Wierzchowska Cave - a magnificent example of karst forms.

„Wieliczka” Salt Mine Underground Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre it is an exceptional place with a special microclimate which makes it stand out among other rehabilitation facilities.

In the Centre, respiratory tract conditions are treated by subterraneotherapy. The method consists in exposing patients to the special effect of intense physical, chemical and biological stimuli, found only in the underground facilities with complex natural and biodynamical structure.The treatment is organised on Level III of the mine, in the Wessel Lake and the Stable of East Mining Hills salt chambers,135m below the ground level.

The activity of the Underground Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre is directed mostly to persons suffering from conditions of the upper and lower respiratory tract, such as:

  • bronchial asthma;
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary condition;
  • recurrent nose, sinus, throat and larynx conditions;
  • chronic bronchus and lung inflammations;
  • allergic conditions.

    The Centre is the only venue in Poland, and one of very few in the world, which carries out a programme of active rehabilitation of the respiratory system in the special microclimate of salt excavations.

    The fundamental role in the treatment procedure is performed by a unique microclimate which is characterised by exceptional bacteriological purity, stable air temperature (10-12oC), high relative air humidity (ca 80%) and the content of sodium chloride (24 mg/m3) and of elements like magnesium, manganese and calcium. The air doesn't contain pollutants in which the contemporary natural environment on the surface of the earth abounds.The considerable air humidity limits the evaporating of water from the respiratory tract and prevents undesired drying of mucous membranes in the respiratory tract.

    In 2004, the Wieliczka Salt Mine Underground Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre received the International ISO 9001:2000 Certificate in the Quality Management in health care in the field of treatment respiratory system and allergic conditions in adults and children.

    The Centre deals with the organisation of rehabilitation and treatment stays during a day and also in the night (one day/night stay, a few days/nights stay and the whole daily/night stay).

    OPTION A SUBTERRANEOTHERAPY: ONE- OR A-FEW-DAYS’ STAYS

    Day rehabilitation and treatment stays leaded 135m below the ground level in the unique scenery of the Wessel Lake salt chamber. Every patients starts with medical tests and trainings. Then the patients spend 6.5 hours in the treatment salt chamber, under the constant care of qualified medical staff (doctor, nurse, physiotherapist). The treatment has a form of active rehabilitation which is modern breathing gymnastics , including breath control exercises, the correction of the breathing patterns, mastering diaphragmatic breathing, exercising respiratory muscles and cleaning of the bronchial tree. The rehabilitation and treatment stays are enriched with music therapy. The patients also have at their disposal rehabilitation equipment: stationary bicycles, orbitrack exercisers, a stepper, exercise sets and ping-pong and billiards tables.

    OPTION B 17-DAY REHABILITATION-TREATMENT STAYS

    The Underground Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre organises 17-day rehabilitation-treatment stays 135m below the ground level in the unique scenery of the Wessel Lake salt chamber. Each stay starts with medical tests at Centre. Once the patient is accepted, a cycle of 14 rehabilitation-treatment stays begins, during which the patients spend 6.5 hours a day in the treatment salt chamber (Sunday is free from treatments, one day during the stay is a rehabilitation walk in the historic part of the Wieliczka Salt Mine and a visit of the Krakow Salt Mine Museum ), under the care of qualified medical staff (doctor, nurse, physiotherapist). The treatment in the Wessel Lake chamber consists in active rehabilitation with modern respiratory gymnastics including breath control exercises, the correction of the breathing patterns, mastering diaphragmatic breathing, exercising respiratory muscles and cleaning of the bronchial tree. The treatment stay also includes exercises to the accompaniment of music.. The patients have at their disposal rehabilitation equipment: stationary bicycles, orbitrack exercisers, a stepper, exercise sets and ping-pong and billiards tables.

    NIGHTLY REHABILITATION-TREATMENT STAYS

    Nightly rehabilitation and treatment stays are organize 135m below the ground level in the unique scenery of the Stable of East Mining Hills salt chamber. Sleeping in the salt mine is an unique method for treatment, rehabilitation and rest. Those stays are a connection of a dream in the specific microclimate of the Wieliczka’s salt excavations with a relax, music therapy, inhalation on the salt graduation tower and pulmonary rehabilitation. The programme of nightly rehabilitation and treatment stays is addressed to persons suffering from the upper and lower respiratory tract conditions and also to persons who are not able to take a part in the daily treatment. There are two option of nightly rehabilitation:

    OPTION C: ONE OR A FEW NIGHTS STAYS

    After medical test at the Center the patient spend 11 hours ( from 20 pm till 7 am) in the treatment salt chamber under the care of qualified medical staff (doctor, nurse, music-therapist /physiotherapist).

    This option is possible only in time of fixed period or for a group of minimum 10 people.

    OPTION D : 14 NIGHTS STAYS

    Each stay starts with medical tests at the Centre. Once the patient is accepted, a cycle of 12 rehabilitation-treatment stays begins (11 nightly stays and 1 daily stay connected with a rehabilitation walk in the historic part of the Wieliczka Salt Mine) during which the patients spend 11 hours in the treatment salt chamber under the care of qualified medical staff (doctor, nurse, music-therapist /physiotherapist).

    Note:
    Sunday is free from treatments.

    When arriving for treatment (stay above three days), you should bring current medical tests(ESR, complete blood count, urine, for persons above 18 - X-ray tests, for persons above 40 – electrocardiography

    Because of the character of the treatment and the conditions in the treatment chamber, a comfortable and warm sportswear and a casual footwear are required.
    The temperature in the chamber is around 10oC!
    During the stay underground, the Centre offers warm drinks (coffee, tea).

    Stays in the special microclimate of the Wieliczka Salt Mine, favouring the treatment of the respiratory tract conditions, are not recommended in some conditions: rheumatism, neoplasm (cancer), cardiac and respiratory failure, neuroses, claustrophobia, severe disability, hyperthyroidism.

    Tour No. 18 Forteca Climbing Center

    Forteca Climbing Center is one of the biggest indoor climbing centers in Poland. Usable surface of the wall exceeds 1200 m2 without bouldering site. Including it, surface of the wall achieves 2000m2.Walls are numerous, situated slantwise, vertical or overhanged (at an angle over 90 degrees). However it allows to climb on every climbing level, from begginer to advanced climber. Routes are gradated for all users. For skilled climbers we have routes demanding advanced climbing techniques. Easy level routes provides a guarantee for good fun, especially for kids. Varied wall formations like chimneys, cracks or monolith (shaped wall) are situated here for more fun. Simple walls have 9 meters of height, however foot skilled climbers we have 17 meters height wall with curved grips (holes in wall) and cracks.
    They have qualified instructors and operators, which are very helpful and you can ask them in case of dilemma. First time users have a basic instruction how to climb and simple guide how to use belaying device. They are prepared to keep calm and safe climbing. However in case of any damage they are ready to help. You can borrow hardware in climbing center or you can buy a new one in climbing shop situated below climbing wall.

    Since the day of its opening (June 2000), Aqua Park is the most popular Krakow centre of entertainment and recreation for the whole family.
